The biennial Alexander County Household Hazardous Waste and Document Destruction Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the County Administration parking lot. The purpose of this event is to provide county residents with an opportunity to dispose of environmentally harmful materials found around the home in a correct and responsible manner.
Below are some of the items that can be disposed of at the HHW Day:
• Household cleaners, including drain openers, toilet bowl cleaners, oven cleaners, and disinfectants;
• Paint products, such as latex and oil-based paint, solvents, thinners, shellacs, varnishes, wood preservatives, and sealers;
• Automotive products such as lead-acid batteries, used motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, and starting fluid;
• Pesticides which include herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides in the forms of aerosols, liquids, granular, etc.
• Miscellaneous items such as acids, bases, kerosene, household batteries, photographic chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, electronics, aerosol cans, pool chemicals, propane gas cylinders, and metallic mercury.
The document destruction truck will also be on site to shred any type of personal documents.
The Hazardous Household Waste and Document Destruction Day is a free service for the residents of Alexander County only. Businesses will not be allowed, with the exception of farmers, who are welcome to dispose of insecticides/pesticides free of charge.
Sponsors for the HHW Day are Alexander County Government, Alexander County Cooperative Extension Service, and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA & CS).
The Alexander County Administration Office is located beside the Senior Center at 621 Liledoun Road.
