Alexander County DSS is seeking volunteers to help deliver meals to our homebound senior citizen and disabled participants.
Meals are delivered 4 days a week and each route will take approximately one hour to deliver.

Residents urged to register for CodeRED alerts
Alexander County Government has reinstated the use of the CodeRED emergency notification system to keep residents informed and enhance public safety. CodeRED is a useful tool to provide important messaging via phone, email, text, and push notifications.
Registration is quick, free, and easy. Residents may register for CodeRED alerts at https://accountportal.onsolve.net/AlexanderCountyCodeRED. For those who already have an account, sign in on the left side of the screen. For those who have never registered, click on “Register” on the right side and follow the prompts.
Residents can also text ALEXANDERCODERED to 24639 to opt in for text alerts and to receive the above sign-up link.
Alexander County Emergency Management Coordinator Daniel Fox said the county considered several emergency notification systems, but the planning committee believes CodeRED to be the best choice.
“Alexander County used CodeRED for several years, and it was especially helpful during COVID-19. We changed to a different service, but based on community feedback, we have now switched back to CodeRED,” said Fox. “After recent tragic events in our state and country, it is imperative to have a reliable means to send and receive alerts. The health, safety, and welfare of our residents and visitors are our top priorities. CodeRED provides us with the ability to direct key National Weather Service alerts to citizens quickly and provide community alerts in the event of other natural or manmade disasters.”
There are several benefits to enrolling in Alexander County’s CodeRED emergency notification system:
• During a crisis, real-time updates can provide life-saving instructions and information.
• Residents can receive important alerts and updates on their cell phone (voice, text, email, and/or push notifications) and home phone (voice only).
• Residents can receive notifications when there are public service announcements that specifically impact their location, including public safety hazards, severe weather, missing persons, road closures, water service updates, etc.

2025 Soil & Water Conservation Winners Announced
The Alexander Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) held our yearly environmental education contests for the 2024/2025 school year. The school winners from each category were honored at our Soil & Water Awards Banquet held on April 10th at the Emerald Hill in Hiddenite. All of the education contests shared the theme “Wetlands Are Wonderful!” Each school level winner in all competitions received $20 and a first-place ribbon. County level winners received $30 and a plaque, while runner ups received $15 and a ribbon. Third place county winners received a ribbon. Contests include a 5th grade poster, a 6th grade essay, a 9th – 12th grade essay, a 6th grade computer designed slide show, a 9th – 12th grade computer designed slide show, and a 7th, 8th, and 9th – 12th grade speech contest. The winner of the 5th grade poster contest was Weston Teague from Millersville Christian. The runner up was Vada Barlow from Bethlehem Elementary, and in third was Camden Livingston from Stony Point Elementary. Weston’s poster went on to receive an honorable mention at the Area Level. In addition to those mentioned above, other school level winners were: Ahna Stevenson from Ellendale Elementary, Carter Gates from Hiddenite Elementary, Lucas Hamby from Sugar Loaf Elementary, Izzy Miller from Taylorsville Elementary, and Chloe Laws from Wittenburg Elementary. In 6th grade essay contest, the county winner was Lane Baumgarner from Millersville Christian. The runner up was Bentley Johnson from EAMS, and third was Caleb Kirk from Millersville Christian. Lane’s essay went on to receive 2nd place at the Area Level. This year’s 6th grade slide show contest winner was Rachel Smithey from Millersville Christian Academy. The runner up was Beatrix Valcourt from WAMS, and third was Caylee Parsons from EAMS. Rachel’s slide show went on to receive an 2nd place at the Area level. This year’s county speech contests were held on February 13th at the Alexander Services Center. The seventh grade speech contest winner was Nayeli Galarza Deleon from EAMS. The runner up was Owen Wike from EAMS. Nayeli went on to compete at the area level in Catawba on March 20th and took 2nd place. The eighth grade speech contest winner was Ziva Sothoron from EAMS. The runner up was Aubrey Kriner. Ziva went on to compete at the Area Level in Catawba on March 20th and took first place! She went on to compete at the state level competition on April 25th and represented Alexander County well! The ninth through twelfth grade speech contest winner was Laurel Mitchell from Alexander Central High School. She went on to compete at the Area Level in Catawba County and received 2nd place. Laurel Mitchell also won the ninth through twelfth grade essay contest this year and received 2nd place at the Area level. Alexander SWCD also held a ninth through twelfth grade slide show contest. This year’s county winner was Adrian Castaneda-Covarrubias from Alexander Early College. The runner up was Laurel Mitchell from Alexander Central High School. Adrian’s slide show went on to take 3rd place at the area level. The Alexander SWCD Board of Supervisors and Staff would like to again congratulate all of the 2025 conservation contest participants and winners on a job well done! NCDIT, Governor announce broadband expansion for 394 homes and businesses in Alexander County
Governor Josh Stein announced more than $63 million in Completing Access to Broadband (CAB) program projects to connect 18,889 households and businesses in 30 counties to high-speed internet. The CAB program will connect 394 homes and businesses in Alexander County.
“North Carolinians’ need access to high-speed internet to connect them with friends and family, business opportunities, telehealth, and more,” said Governor Josh Stein. “Broadband is key 21st Century infrastructure, and these partnerships between counties across the state and internet providers will help connect more North Carolinians.”
“Access to high-speed internet is not just about connectivity; it’s about empowering individuals and communities to thrive in the digital age,” said NCDIT Secretary and State Chief Information Officer Teena Piccione. “We will continue collaborating with counties and internet service providers to fund projects to expand high-speed internet access to all North Carolinians.”
These projects will be awarded by NCDIT and are funded by more than $44 million from the federal American Rescue Plan and nearly $19 million from selected broadband providers:
Alexander: Yadkin Valley Telephone Membership Corporation (Zirrus)
This award will provide high-speed internet access to 394 homes and businesses (14.78% of the county’s 2,665 eligible locations).
Alamance: Connect Holding II, LLC (Brightspeed) and Spectrum Southeast, LLC
These awards will provide high-speed internet access to 469 homes and businesses (20.51% of the county’s 2,287 eligible locations).
Bertie: Roanoke Connect Holdings, LLC (Fybe)
This award will provide high-speed internet access to 1,380 homes and businesses (91.39% of the county’s 1,510 eligible locations).

This award will provide high-speed internet access to 210 homes and businesses (88.61% of the county’s 237 eligible locations).
The CAB program’s procurement process creates a partnership between counties and NCDIT to identify areas that need access, solicit proposals from prequalified internet service providers, and quickly make awards. Awardees must agree to provide high-speed service that reliably meets or exceeds speeds of 100 Mbps download and 100 Mbps upload.
These projects must be completed by December 31, 2026.
These awards add to the $533 million in Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) grants and previous CAB projects that will connect more than 211,000 North Carolina households and businesses to high-speed internet. See progress here.

Alexander County Emergency Management urges the public to register for the Special Needs Registry, which has been established to assist those with special needs during an emergency or disaster situation.
Please add your information to the registry if you or a family member has any of the following conditions: hearing impaired, visually impaired, speech impaired, memory impaired, mentally impaired, special behavioral concerns, bedridden, use wheelchair, use walker, use cane, require 24-hour caregiver, bariatric needs, ongoing contagious condition, allergies, seizures, special dietary needs, DNR (do not resuscitate), living will, special medication, insulin dependent, wound care, incontinence, ostomy care, suction, G-tube, N-G tube, dialysis, sleep apnea machine, pacemaker, defibrillator, portable oxygen tank, oxygen generator, or other special needs.
