Alexander County Board of Commissioners Chairman
The center has stood as a shining example of what a community can accomplish when it comes together for a common goal. Built on land provided by Alexander County and made possible through $300,000 raised by dedicated senior adults, the center has become more than a facility — it’s a lifeline, a second home, and a place where lives are enriched every single day.
With additional satellite locations in Bethlehem and Stony Point, the Alexander Senior Center serves thousands of senior adults each year, offering a wide variety of programs, services, and events.
A Place to Belong
“The Alexander Senior Center is one of the best-kept secrets in our county. It’s a place where our older adults not only stay active and engaged, but where they thrive,” said Marty Pennell, Chairman of the Alexander County Board of Commissioners. “We want more people to experience the joy and purpose that the center brings.”
From the moment you walk through the doors of the Taylorsville center, you’re greeted with the sounds of laughter, conversation, and activity. One of the most popular recent activities and attractions is the Musicians’ Jam, held every Monday at 10:00 a.m. and available for in-person enjoyment or streaming on the county’s YouTube channel.
Additionally, seniors gather to work on puzzles, color, or simply catch up with friends. It’s not uncommon to hear someone say, “This place saved my life,” or “This is my home away from home.”
A Calendar Full of Connection
The center offers an impressive schedule of activities each week. Exercise classes like cardio drumming, tai chi, and yoga help improve mobility and balance. Creative classes such as crocheting, quilting, card making, and woodcarving allow seniors to express themselves while learning new skills. Social events like bingo, birthday lunches, book club, and line dancing are also very popular. The senior center’s calendar also includes computer classes, day and overnight trips, various parties, cooking classes, and so much more.
Support That Makes a Difference
The Alexander Senior Center is more than just fun and games — it’s a valuable resource hub for all seniors. Certified SHIIP (Seniors Health Insurance Information Program) counselors provide guidance for Medicare drug plan enrollment, saving Alexander County seniors more than $1 million annually. The center also offers assistance with notary services, job searching, advance directives, elder law seminars, and connections to critical services like transportation, caregiver support, and even home repairs through various programs.
Chairman Pennell added, “The Alexander Senior Center is about more than activity — it’s about providing opportunities for our seniors. We’re proud to offer services they enjoy and that enrich their lives. Whether it’s helping someone navigate Medicare or connecting them to resources, the senior center is here to provide that necessary support.”
In partnership with organizations like Vaya Health, AARP, the Red Cross, Hospice & Home Care of Alexander County, Western Piedmont Council of Governments, and others, the center hosts health fairs, mental health classes, tax preparation services, blood drives, and more.
Providing Services Across the County
Recognizing the growing needs of local seniors, the county expanded its senior services to Bethlehem and Stony Point back in 2013. The Bethlehem Senior Center, located at Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church, opened in April 2013. Activities there include Tai Chi, woodworking, Medicare assistance, needlework, walking groups, computer classes, card making, and more. The Bethlehem center is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Stony Point location, next to the library branch, opened in July 2013 and focuses on painting classes and Medicare assistance. Plans are in the works to expand offerings at the Stony Point center, which is currently open on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
These satellite centers are crucial in reaching more seniors where they live, helping reduce isolation and encouraging connection in all parts of the county.
A Community Like No Other
The spirit of generosity and friendship fills the Alexander Senior Center. Seniors routinely support one another with shared garden produce, extra medical equipment, home-baked goods, and — most importantly — genuine care and concern. Even the center’s fish tanks spark joy and daily conversation, drawing smiles from everyone who visits.
Special events throughout the year include the Senior Celebration, Shred Truck Day, Valentine’s Dance, and other holiday parties.
“Our seniors are truly like one big family,” said Kristy Hunt, Senior Center Director. “They celebrate together, grieve together, and cheer each other on through all of life’s ups and downs. It’s an honor to be a part of their journey.”
Whether a senior is looking for assistance, hobbies, or just a good friend, the Alexander Senior Center is ready to help them live life to the fullest.
