Alexander County has been awarded a Multimodal Planning Grant from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to develop a comprehensive Multimodal Network Plan. This plan will establish a clear strategy for enhancing transportation for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users across the county.
According to Patrick Creech, Alexander County Senior Planner, the goal is to create a connected system of transportation routes that safely integrates walking paths, bike lanes, public transit, and roads.
“Developing this network will significantly enhance accessibility, safety, and quality of life for residents, while supporting economic growth and sustainability in Alexander County,” said Creech.
The plan will:
• Analyze current conditions, including existing infrastructure, safety concerns, and demographic information.
• Engage the community through surveys, public meetings, stakeholder interviews, and targeted outreach efforts.
• Develop detailed recommendations for improving pedestrian, bicycle, and transit facilities.
• Prioritize projects to ensure efficient and equitable allocation of resources.
• Provide actionable implementation steps, complete with funding sources and timelines.
• Integrate transportation planning with ongoing growth, development pressures, and the county’s new Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code.
Alexander County is currently seeking community members to join a steering committee, which will play a critical role in shaping this project.
“Your involvement will help shape a more connected and accessible Alexander County,” Creech stated.
Committee members will:
• Attend three scheduled meetings (with virtual attendance options), spaced throughout the project’s duration.
• Review and discuss detailed assessments of existing conditions and proposed project recommendations.
• Provide valuable insights and community perspectives to guide public engagement strategies.
• Set clear, achievable goals for the Multimodal Network Plan.
