POSITION: Paralegal I

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: This position will provide direct support to the Agency Attorney and any contracted attorneys. Work will be directed by the Agency Attorney. This position is responsible for a variety of assignments which may include but not be limited to: drafting complex legal documents, reviewing, and approving for form and legality, various legal instruments; handling complaints and inquiries of a legal nature from the general public, and administratively maintaining the legal area. Work is reviewed through inspection, conferences, reports, and review of completed work. The two primary areas of litigation and appeals for the agency are child protective services and adult protective services/ incompetency hearings and guardianship. This position will participate in data gathering and preparation of exhibits, documents, and affidavits and will be responsible for scheduling witnesses, coordinating with other attorneys, and organizing supporting documents, exhibits, and evidence. In addition to the litigation areas, the legal team also provides legal support to other areas, to include child support, economic independence and agency administration on personnel issues. This position requires an increased degree of independence and knowledge of the legal system regarding Child Welfare and Adult Services, as well as Child Support. Work requires a significant knowledge of office procedures and practices as well as office programs, organizational structure and the ability to initiate, monitor, review and maintain a variety of documents to comply with case standards. This employee functions independently while under the supervision of the agency Attorney.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited school for paralegal training; or graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in English, Journalism, or a degree directly related to the area assigned; or graduation from high school and four years of paralegal experience performing delegated, substantive legal work.
EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: Working knowledge of North Carolina Department of Social Services.
