ALEXANDER COUNTY (May 20, 2021) — Alexander County officials have confirmed the death of a 38-year-old male who was killed when a trench collapsed in the parking lot of a local diner located at 4500 Hwy. 64/90 West. The individual was identified as Shane Anthony Sharpe of Taylorsville. The construction crew was replacing a damaged culvert.
At approximately 1:50 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, Alexander County 911 Communications received a call about an injured construction worker due to a trench collapse. Units from Ellendale Volunteer Fire Department arrived a few minutes after the call was given out. Firemen found that dirt and asphalt had fallen onto an individual inside a trench that was approximately 10 feet deep. The firemen and volunteers were able to free the individual from the trench. CPR was administered immediately but was unsuccessful. The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Traffic was detoured around Hwy. 64/90 using Ellendale Fire Department Lane until approximately 7:30 a.m. on May 20.
Agencies responding to the incident include Alexander County EMS, Alexander Rescue Squad, Alexander County Sheriff’s Office, Alexander County Emergency Management, Alexander County Fire Marshal’s Office, Ellendale Volunteer Fire Department, Bethlehem Community Fire & Rescue, NC Highway Patrol, NC Department of Labor, and NC Department of Transportation.
