ALEXANDER COUNTY, NC (August 6, 2020) — Central Alexander-Taylorsville Fire Department received an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) in the amount of $233,333. The grant award was announced on July 30, 2020.
The AFG is a federally-funded FEMA grant for fire departments to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
Central Alexander-Taylorsville Fire Department applied for the grant to replace outdated self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), which are the air packs that firefighters wear to breathe while in a toxic atmosphere. The new equipment will have technology to allow tracking of firefighters inside during an incident. The new technology will also include computer software that will show the firefighters’ information by scanning a programmed card, as well as information about the firefighters’ level of air consumption. In the event of equipment malfunction, a message would be sent to incident command and would allow the incident commander to view recorded data from the SCBA.
Alexander County Fire Marshal Mark Earle said, “We are excited to receive this grant as it will fund the purchase of equipment that will enhance the accountability and safety of firefighters on the scene.”
