POSITION: Animal Care Technician/Animal Control Officer
SALARY RANGE: $24,633.19 – $34,806.05 (Grade 61)

Description of Work: An employee in this class performs tasks associated with care of impounded animals and general cleaning of the kennel and cattery areas. Work involves feeding animals, moving animals from one enclosure to another, and cleaning primary animal enclosures, laundry, and other kennel areas following strict cleaning and disinfection protocols based on the Animal Welfare Act. Work also involves assisting the shelter manager with euthanasia, vaccination, and de-worming of animals as needed. Employee is subject to the usual hazards of handling dogs and cats. Employee is cross-trained to cover front desk duties and to counsel potential adopters as needed and also to perform tasks associated with enforcement of animal control regulations including capturing and confining animals, maintaining records, and exercising tact and courtesy while communicating with animal owners and the general public. Weekend and holiday work is required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Animal Services Director and evaluated through observation, and discussions concerning the efficiency and effectiveness of performed duties.
Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or GED. Possession of a valid NC driver’s license. Certification as a Rabies Vaccinator and Euthanasia Technician or ability to obtain certification within six months of the date of employment. Strongly prefer someone with experience as a veterinary technician or assistant or with experience in a commercial kennel setting or a combination of education and experience.
