The Alexander County Board of Commissioners held a Special Meeting on September 21, 1999, at the Alexander County Superior Courtroom, Taylorsville, North Carolina. Chairman Joel Harbinson called the Public Hearing to order at 7:00 pm. Commissioner David Odom gave the Invocation. Commissioner Wesley Bolick led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. PUBLIC HEARING ON THE PROPOSED STATE PRISON Chairman Harbinson called the special meeting to order. Commissioner John Watts gave a brief update of the cost, the potential income, and the various phases of completing the prison project. Twelve citizens spoke during the Public Hearing. Several persons opposed the prison while others were supportive of the prison for economic growth in Alexander County. Dean Walker, Administrator of Marion Correctional Institute, NC Department of Correction, and Roger W. Moon, Operations Manager, Division of Prisons, Western Region, NC Department of Correction were present and answered questions. Comments were made by each of the Commissioners, Robertson, Harbinson, Odom, Watts, and Bolick. Commissioner Odom made a motion to exercise the option to purchase 130 acres of land from Taylorsville Pre Cast Molds, Inc. for One Million Dollars, less the $50,000 paid as a down payment, to give to the State to construct a prison in Alexander County. Commissioner Watts seconded the motion. The Board voted three Commissioners for the motion (Watts, Harbinson, and Odom) and two Commissioners against (Bolick and Robertson). Motion carried. ADJOURNMENT Upon a motion by Commissioner Odom and a second by Commissioner Watts, the Board voted unanimously to adjourn. The next Commissioners Meeting will be on October 5, 1999, at 6:45 pm.
